Issue 1 Theme: Displacement
The word that we have selected for SoulRice’s inaugural anthology theme is one that appears unsettlingly often in our current news cycle: Palestinian, Sudanese, and American people are being torn from their communities, with their safety and dignity stripped; Afghan women are being pushed inside, forbidden from living their public lives; Tuvalu’s entire populace are evacuating the land that they call their own; and tigers, elephants, and polar bears are being driven away from their generational homes, fighting desperately for survival as their habitats crumble.
Poetry cannot fix this shameful tragedy. It might, however, educate, or unite, or, perhaps, inspire action. It may merely entertain, or sadden, or bring comfort to its writer or reader. If you feel that you have something to say, to any end, about displacement, then we would greatly welcome your contribution. Perhaps the theme is present in your personal life: have you been displaced from your community in some way, through immigration, through ageing, or through conflict? Have you experienced a feeling of emotional displacement? Novices and experts, political and confessional poets alike, your words have great value, and if you like what you see in SoulRice’s mission, we would love to hear from you.
What are we looking for?
Soul Rice wants collaboration. Only through collaboration can we liberate language from academic oppression. Have you written a piece with others? Ever fashioned a new word? Do you create real blood and guts poetry? If so then we want to see it.
